Several Mondays ago was a national holiday. I went with a work colleague, her roommate, and a couple of Congolese friends to a resort complex about 45 minutes north of the city. It had a massive pool, night club, hotel, and restaurant. It is in the middle of a completely undeveloped area, so felt almost other worldly as you reached it via a long dirt road. Its just another example of the many small pockets of comfort and relative luxury in a country where so many don't have access to consistent electricity or running water.
The pool was right on the Congo River, where you could see someone paddling in a dugout boat right before a jet ski buzzed past.
Thats Kinshasa, the capital of the Democratic Republic of Congo, across the river.
